Fillings are the most common way to repair cavities and are often completed in a single visit. Advancements in composite materials have made “tooth-colored” fillings more conservative, aesthetic and durable than ever before. This is the option that Dr. Chavez uses in her practice.
The tooth and surrounding area is numbed to ensure there is no discomfort, the cavity is then removed and the filling is placed in that space.
When a tooth has significant damage and fillings are not longer an option, a crown is often the solution. This is usually the case with extensive decay, fracture, root canals, or an existing large filling needs replacing. Crowns are long-lasting and durable with the proper care, and look and feel just like your original tooth.
This procedure requires at least two appointments. During the first appointment, the damaged portion of the tooth is removed and the tooth is shaped and smoothed to make room for the crown to be placed over it. You will leave this appointment with a temporary crown to cover and protect your tooth while our lab custom fabricates your new permanent crown. When your new crown is ready, you will return and the crown will be fitted to ensure absolute comfort in your mouth. The crown is then cemented into place.
